KWL (Levels 1 and 3)

Add your thoughts using the KWL approach. Thinking about Game Mechanics, Games-Based Learning or gamification.....

K = What do you know?

making learning similar to playing games, need technology skills

W = What do you want to learn?

how to change my structure to more game like

L = What have you learned? (we'll do this last one later)
don't need technology to actually deploy GBL. structural gamification is enough to enhance engagement. Does not require much time.

Reflection

i like the idea of making learning like game to engage the students so it is not a chore but a game to learn the content.
Structural Gamification - simple changes like points for watching a video or setting the class as groups vs other groups already engages the students without changing the content.

Content Gamification - much harder, changing the content to create a story. eg code combat. will need technology to do so.

Level 2

Where do I start?

Identify some learning outcomes that you will be visiting with your students in upcoming lessons. Note down here some ways they might benefit from gamification.
learning outcome -food presentation.
master chef as a game in food technology, who can present the meal best to add points to their teams, best team wins gets to choose a recipe to cook during practical next week.
Observe and reflect
After playing a game what are your personal thoughts about the design and elements involved and how any of these could help you in thinking about doing the same in a learning activity?

made up a simple game for designing a recipe for next year. the class was broken up into two teams to come up with the best recipe with certain criterias. eg vegan, split period. Winner of the recipe got to choose their favourite recipe to be included in the program.
as long as it is competitive and engaging with a reward, students reacted really well.

Level 3

Premiers Reading Challenge Reflection

Write your thoughts here and or print a rubric and circle the appropriate areas you notice as you review the rules of this gamified experience. (feel free to scan or photograph and upload your rubic to this page.)

link to the rubric is broken, however, a simple change in structure to get the students to read books is straight forward. A reward such as a certificate is simple and effective. the table of levelling up to receiving a medal is pretty awesome.

Zombie Learning Reflection

Write your thoughts here and or print a rubric and circle the appropriate areas you notice as you review the rules of this gamified experience.
(feel free to scan or photograph and upload your rubic to this page.)

link to the rubric is broken, however my thoughts:
it satisfies Kevin's framework of Dynamics - having a zombie narrative, which is much more interesting than day to day senarios. It satisfies Mechanics as the students are problem solving in complex scenarios and calculated decisions which all are higher order thinking. It satisfies "Components" as students must be a Avatar, there would be content unlocking and levels and last but not least. "pyramid" where most of the elements of gamification is applied in this game to teach studets geography.

You Try/ A final reflection

Add your finished plan here as an upload file or as text you have cut and pasted into the wiki. We would love to give you feedback to help you get started. (remember it does not need be perfect, it is a first attempt). Alternatively it can be emailed to us instead.

i believe Progression is what i will use in my classroom more often, breaking up tasks and ensuring students complete it before moving on to the next.
competition is always good to use as my students are highly competitive.

i am thinking of getting the students to complete a costing sheet for a basic baked good, eg a muffin. my students hate costing sheets as it relates to mathematics.
to engage them and have fun, they can have first choice in choosing a topping if they finish it first, there will be a limited amount of topping thus rewarding those who complete the task first. Win states and resource acquisition would be in implemented.

Have you filled in the evaluation? yes

Have you found the bonus level content? no
but i got the password. link broken...

i emailed you for the rubric and checklist. please email it to me. thanks.
